The XXIX International Seminar of Agricultural Economists took place in Krasnobród, Poland, on 15–18 June 2025. The event was organized by the Institute of Rural and Agricultural Development of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Instytut Rozwoju Wsi i Rolnictwa PAN).
The seminar brought together leading scholars from the Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw University of Life Sciences, the Institute of Agricultural Economics, the University of Agriculture in Kraków, John Paul II University in Biała Podlaska, the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, Poznań University of Life Sciences, the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation in Puławy, and Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce.
The programme covered a wide range of topics, including the impact of EU climate policy on structural changes in the agricultural sector, diversification of agricultural income in European countries, regional differentiation of rural areas, transformation of labour markets in less developed regions, and depopulation in rural areas. The participants also discussed the transformation of the energy market with regard to renewable energy sources, including in the agri-food sector, alternatives to organic farming systems, and the environmental impact of agriculture.
Ukrainian scholars were also invited to participate in the event, representing the State Institution “Institute of Regional Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine”, the State Institution “Institute for Economics and Forecasting of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine”, the Institute of Land Use of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine, and the National University of Ostroh Academy. Ukrainian researchers delivered presentations on the prospects for rural development in Ukraine, post-war reconstruction of territories, the role of land capital in agriculture, rural areas, and food security. The potential for rural development within the framework of scientific partnership between Ukraine and Poland was widely discussed.
Representatives of the Mykhaylo Ptoukha Institute for Demography and Life Quality Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine also took part in the seminar: Deputy Director, Academician of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor M.A. Khvesyk, and Chief Research Fellow of the Department of Ecosystem Services and Protected Areas, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Senior Research Fellow M.V. Ilina. They presented a report titled “The Importance of Ukraine’s Natural Capital for Post-War Recovery and Ensuring the Resilience of Rural Areas.” The report addressed a broad range of issues, including an assessment of the impact of ongoing military actions on Ukraine’s natural resources and the state of the environment; an analysis of land resources and their importance for rural development; justification of the most effective measures for restoring natural resources damaged by the war; and other related matters.
