Scientific Results of the Department’s Activities

Current trends in generative activity, fertility, its dynamics and structural characteristics:

  • the essence and role of generative activity within the system of relations concerning population reproduction have been substantiated;
  • regional specificities of fertility levels and structural characteristics have been determined;
  • the latest features of reproductive behaviour among selected socio-demographic groups of the population have been identified;
  • regularities in changes to the fertility model in Ukraine and European countries have been revealed in historical retrospect;
  • the specific nature of the interrelations between fertility and other demographic processes, as well as the features of its impact on population reproduction as a whole, has been established;

Fertility determinants and the development of hypotheses regarding further changes in fertility for the construction of forecasts:

  • the determinants of fertility shifts have been studied, and the mechanisms of their influence have been examined with due regard to the specificities of individual countries and regions;
  • the mechanisms through which a range of general and specific determinants affect generative activity in Ukraine have been revealed;
  • the specific nature of the interrelations between economic activity and reproductive activity, primarily among women, has been substantiated;
  • the links between socio-economic status and reproductive activity have been examined;
  • the links between fertility and the course of marriage and family processes have been analysed;
  • the potential opportunities for increasing the fertility level in Ukraine have been identified.

The market for social services in preschool upbringing, including the preschool education system:

  • the system of social services for childcare, upbringing, and education has been comprehensively studied;
  • directions for improving the conditions of generative activity within the preschool education system have been proposed.

Characteristics of the marriage and family sphere of population reproduction:

  • the marital and family structure of the population and of its selected age groups has been studied on the basis of population census materials and representative sample socio-demographic surveys;
  • the specific features of the contemporary model of nuptiality among the population of Ukraine have been determined, including age characteristics, development trends, and regional specificities;
  • divorce among the population has been comprehensively analysed, including its current state, dynamics, and regional specificities;
  • the main processes of family-structure formation among the population have been studied.

Current trends in the development of the institutions of marriage and family, their determinants and demographic consequences:

  • theoretical and methodological foundations for studying the institutions of marriage and family in contemporary Ukraine have been developed;
  • regularities in changes to marriage and family models in Ukraine have been revealed in historical retrospect;
  • the transformations of the institution of the family and its functions at different stages of the development of Ukrainian society have been studied;
  • the spread of new forms of marriage and the motivations for choosing forms of marriage among different age groups have been examined.

Problems and risks in the life of Ukrainian families in the context of societal transformation processes:

  • the socio-demographic risks of the development of the Ukrainian family, their determinants, and consequences in different periods of Ukrainian society’s development have been identified;
  • the determinants of the spread of social orphanhood in contemporary Ukraine, the scale of this problem, and its economic and demographic consequences have been established;
  • directions for minimising risks to the development of the Ukrainian family through socio-demographic policy instruments have been proposed.

Family and pronatalist policy in Ukraine and international experience in its formation:

  • the conceptual foundations and directions for implementing family policy have been studied;
  • the experience of leading European countries regarding the foundations of family and pronatalist policy and the functioning of its various instruments has been examined;
  • practical recommendations for the further improvement and development of Ukraine’s family policy have been developed.

Demographic ageing and its specific features in Ukraine:

  • the dynamics and differentiation of the level of ageing in Ukraine have been studied using a set of relevant indicators, and the country’s position in global rankings according to various population-ageing indicators has been assessed;
  • regional specificities of population ageing have been identified;
  • Ukraine’s implementation of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing and its adherence to the United Nations Principles for Older Persons have been comprehensively analysed;
  • gender specificities of the marital and family structure of the older population have been determined;
  • the degree of adaptation of various spheres of socio-economic life in Ukraine to the conditions of progressive population ageing has been assessed;
  • ways to improve and develop policy concerning older persons in Ukraine have been identified.

Gender issues in contemporary society and the specific features of their manifestation in Ukraine:

  • the specific features of the social position of women in Ukraine have been identified in the context of the requirements of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women;
  • the current state of gender statistics has been analysed, and selected recommendations for its improvement have been developed.
